Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Addiction
Searching the streets of Ulaanbaatar (UB) for homeless people and meeting them where they are...
‘SERGELT’ MOBILE DROP-IN CENTRE is a contact point for homeless people to work together towards improving living situations and where possible towards reintegration into society.
We work from a remodelled city bus that serves as mobile drop-in centre: an easy accessible and welcoming meeting place where homeless persons can come to any time of the day for a meal, a talk or need for help.

Homeless in UB
In Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia, and coldest capital of the world, an estimated 6,000 people are living on the street.
Poverty, unemployment and lack of education have caused many social problems such as depression, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and crime. Locals are left to their own resources to find employment or other means of sustaining themselves. Together with a lack of adequate social assistance for people to overcome their problems, those overwhelmed by it quickly lose hope and many of the poor end up living on the streets.
Homeless people suffer from wounds, illnesses and harsh living conditions. Many are disillusioned and have little or no expectation they will be able to step out of the cycle of poverty and addiction. They experience social isolation and exclusion due to their appearance, smell & alcohol problems. To survive the harsh climate many of the homeless sleep in manholes where the city’s hot water pipes are located as a way to keep warm during the long, bitter winters.
